Moon rocks are cannabis buds that have been dipped or sprayed with cannabis oil and then rolled in kief, the loose resin glands from the plant. The three layers together often test around 50% THC, well above typical flower, which runs about 12 to 30%.
They're smoked in a glass pipe or bong, broken up by hand, usually over a layer of regular flower. Health Canada tells new and occasional users to avoid cannabis extracts, and moon rocks are coated in two of them: hash oil and kief.

What are moon rocks made of?
Three things you can buy separately, stuck together:
- A bud of flower in the middle. Any strain can be used.
- Cannabis oil (hash oil, distillate or another concentrate) dipped, sprayed or painted on, which makes it sticky and dark.
- Kief rolled over the outside, which gives it the dusty, sugared look and the name.
You'll also see them called cannabis caviar or infused flower. The name comes from the look: a dusty, grey-green lump that does resemble a little moon rock. Not to be confused with "moon rocks" as slang for MDMA crystals, which is a different drug entirely.
How strong are moon rocks?
Consumer guides put them at about 50% THC. Montana's cannabis regulator puts typical flower at 12 to 30%. The real number depends on the oil and the kief used. There's no standard recipe, so the label on the package is your best guide. Because the layers are uneven, one piece can be stronger than the next.
For a beginner, the useful comparison is this: a bowl of moon rocks is like a bowl of flower with a dab stirred in. The dabs and concentrates page explains why that matters.
Are moon rocks the strongest weed?
No. They're flower plus concentrate, so they're far stronger than flower alone. Pure concentrates go higher: Montana's consumer guide puts concentrates at 50 to 98% THC. Moon rocks sit in between, which is exactly why they trip people up. They look like flower and hit like a concentrate.
How do you smoke moon rocks?
They're sticky and dense, so the usual tools don't work. Dispensary and consumer guides describe the same method:
- Don't use a grinder. The oil gums up the teeth. Break off a small piece with your fingers or scissors.
- Use glass: a pipe or a bong. The bowl guide covers the basics.
- Put regular flower in the bowl first, then the piece of moon rock on top. The flower keeps air moving; moon rocks alone clog and go out.
- Light the edge and expect a slow, greasy burn with thick smoke. Moon rocks are hard to keep lit.
- Go slow, then wait. Put the pipe down. The full effect can take up to 30 minutes to arrive. See the next section for why.
Joints are a bad fit: the oil soaks into the paper, and the joint won't stay lit.
What moon rocks feel like, and when
Health Canada says inhaled cannabis is felt in seconds to minutes, but can take up to 30 minutes to reach full effect. One consumer guide describes moon rocks the same way: some effect right away, then a bigger wave about 30 minutes in, lasting several hours. That delay is where second and third pulls go wrong. A medically reviewed consumer guide lists anxiety, paranoia, dizziness, a faster heart rate and dry mouth among the common effects. Health Canada says more THC means more impairment and a higher risk of serious side effects.
Not a first-time product
Health Canada tells new and occasional users to avoid extracts like hash, kief, wax and shatter because of their THC concentration, and moon rocks are flower coated in hash oil and kief. One published case report describes a 20-year-old with no past psychiatric history who had smoked cannabis often since his mid-teens. The day after he first tried moon rocks in a blunt, he became anxious and paranoid, hurt himself, and was taken to the emergency room. It's a single case, and his doctors couldn't be sure moon rocks were the cause. It shows that even a regular user can be surprised by a much stronger product. If you're new, read the first-time guide and start with flower. If you've overdone it, the too high page tells you what to do. It's still smoke, too: the CDC says cannabis smoke carries many of the same toxins as tobacco smoke.

Words you'll hear
- Cannabis caviar, infused flower: other names for moon rocks. Some stores use "caviar" for flower with oil but no kief.
- Kief: the loose resin glands. See trichomes and kief.
- Hash oil, distillate: the concentrate layer. See dabs and concentrates.
- Moon rocks (MDMA): slang for MDMA crystals. Not cannabis.
Common questions
Can you smoke moon rocks in a joint?
Not well. The oil soaks the paper and the joint keeps going out. Dispensary guides say to break a small piece off by hand and smoke it in a glass pipe or bong on top of regular flower.
Is moon rock the strongest weed?
No. At around 50% THC it's far stronger than regular flower, but pure concentrates test higher, from 50 to 98% in Montana's consumer guide. Moon rocks are flower with concentrate on it; dabs are the concentrate.
What's the difference between moon rocks and regular weed?
Regular flower is just the dried bud, usually 12 to 30% THC. Moon rocks are a bud coated in cannabis oil and rolled in kief, often around 50%. They're stickier, burn slower, and hit much harder.
How much is a gram of moon rocks?
It varies by store and state and we don't track prices. Expect to pay more per gram than for flower, since you're also paying for the oil and kief, and remember a gram of moon rocks is far more THC than a gram of flower.
Are moon rocks a strain?
No. A strain is a variety of plant. Moon rocks can be made from any strain; the name describes the coating of oil and kief, not the plant inside.
Are moon rocks the same as the drug moon rocks?
No. "Moon rocks" is also slang for MDMA crystals, a completely different drug. This page is about cannabis buds coated in oil and kief, sold in licensed dispensaries.
How long does a moon rocks high last?
Smoked cannabis is felt within minutes and can take up to 30 minutes to reach full effect, and moon rocks are described as building for about half an hour and lasting several hours. Go slow, and wait at least 30 minutes before deciding whether you want more.
