What is a one hitter?

The smallest pipe there is, and for a lot of beginners the right one.

Quick answer

A one hitter is a slim, straight pipe, about the length of a cigarette, with a tiny bowl at one end that holds enough ground flower for one or two pulls. You pack it, light the end while you draw, tap out the ash, and put it away. Many come in a small wooden box called a dugout that stores the pipe and a little ground flower together.

People like them because they're cheap, discreet and portioned. The bowl holds a fraction of what a pipe or joint does, so each fill is small. The trade-off is harsher, hotter smoke than a water pipe.

What is a one hitter, exactly?

A tube with a narrow bowl at one end and a mouthpiece at the other, usually glass or metal, sometimes ceramic or wood. No carb hole, no water, no moving parts. The bowl holds roughly a tenth to a third of a gram, enough for one or two pulls, sometimes a few more. Other names: bat, oney and taster. A chillum is a slightly larger, cone-shaped version with a long history in India.

Why people use a one hitter

  • Portion control. Each fill is small, so you know roughly how much you're about to smoke. It won't stop you from packing another, but it builds in a pause. For a beginner, that pause is the point.
  • Discretion. It's small, it's quick, and the smell is short. Some metal ones are made to look like a cigarette for that reason.
  • Less flower. You burn only what you pack. Nothing smolders in an ashtray.
  • Cheap and simple. They're inexpensive, and there are no parts to lose.

Either way, use a pipe made for smoking. Don't improvise one. A BC Centre for Disease Control harm-reduction sheet warns that pipes made of plastic or pop cans can release toxic fumes when heated. It also says kitchen foil has a coating that can be harmful to inhale when heated.

What is a one hitter dugout?

A pocket-sized box, usually wood, with two compartments: a round hole that holds the one hitter and a larger chamber for ground flower. You press the empty bowl into the chamber and twist, and it packs itself. Some have a spring that pops the pipe up when you slide the lid, and a little metal poker for clearing the bowl. Keep the chamber topped up with ground flower and the whole kit fits in a jeans pocket.

How to use a one hitter

  1. Grind the flower medium. Chunks won't go in; powder falls through and clogs.
  2. Pack the bowl. Press the bowl end into ground flower in a dugout and twist, or pinch some in with your fingers. Firm enough to stay put when you tip it, not jammed.
  3. Hold it angled slightly up so nothing falls out, with the mouthpiece at your lips.
  4. Light the end while you draw slowly. Keep the flame at the tip, not down the barrel. Small, gentle pulls. Don't hold the smoke in. Public-health guidelines say breath-holding pulls more of the smoke's toxic material into your lungs.
  5. Tap out the ash against your palm, or blow back through the mouthpiece. Poke it clear if it's stuck.
  6. Wait before repacking. Smoked cannabis kicks in fast, but the full effect can take a while. Take a small puff, then wait before you decide on another. The first-time guide covers the timing.

Small pipe, same smoke

A one hitter limits the amount; it doesn't clean the smoke. The CDC says cannabis smoke carries many of the same toxins and cancer-causing chemicals as tobacco smoke. It says smoked cannabis can harm lung tissue however it's smoked. Metal tips get hot enough to burn, so let it cool before it goes back in the box. Keep the dugout away from children and pets. If a child gets into cannabis, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. And if you overdo it, the too high page tells you what to do.

How to clean a one hitter

They clog fast because the bore is narrow. About once a week if you use it often, drop it in a zip bag with isopropyl alcohol (91% or stronger) and a spoonful of coarse salt. Shake it, let it sit, then run a pipe cleaner through. Rinse with warm water until there's no alcohol smell. Keep the alcohol away from flames and work near a window. Between cleans, the poker from the dugout keeps it breathing. The bong cleaning guide has the full method and the alcohol-free options.

The downsides

  • Harsh. The smoke travels a few inches with no water to cool it. Many first-timers cough.
  • Hot. Glass and metal both heat up; a quick second pull can sting.
  • Scooby snacks. Pack it loose or draw too hard and you get bits of flower in your mouth.
  • Clogs. Weekly cleaning, or it stops drawing.
  • Not always one hit. Many hold one or two pulls, some a few more. The name is about the idea, not an exact count.

Words you'll hear

  • Bat, oney, taster: one hitter.
  • Chillum: a slightly bigger straight pipe, often glass, same idea.
  • Dugout: the box that holds the pipe and ground flower.
  • Poker: the thin metal pin for clearing the bowl.
  • Self-ashing: a one hitter with a spring tip that pushes the ash out.
  • Spoon: the classic small pipe with a carb, the next size up. See how to pack a bowl.

Common questions

What is the point of a one hitter?

A small, discreet, portioned pipe. The bowl holds a fraction of a gram, so you smoke a little and stop, which is why many beginners like it. It's also cheap and fits in a pocket, especially with a dugout.

Does a one hitter get you high?

Yes. It's the same flower, just a smaller fill. Strong flower can still hit hard, so take a small puff and wait before you repack.

Is a one hitter really just one hit?

Usually one or two pulls, sometimes a few more. The bowl holds roughly a tenth to a third of a gram, depending on the pipe. The name is about the idea, not an exact count.

What is a single hitter?

Another name for a one hitter: a small, straight pipe with a tiny bowl. People also call it a bat, an oney or a taster.

What is a dugout?

A pocket box, usually wood, with a hole for the one hitter and a chamber for ground flower. You press the pipe into the chamber to pack it. Many include a spring lid and a poker for cleaning.

Is a one hitter healthier than a joint?

It limits the amount, not the smoke. The CDC says smoked cannabis can harm lung tissue however it's smoked. A one hitter also skips the paper and usually the tobacco, but it's hotter and harsher than a bong.

How do you clean a one hitter?

Zip bag, isopropyl alcohol, a spoonful of coarse salt, shake, soak, pipe cleaner, rinse until there's no alcohol smell. Keep it away from flames. About once a week if you use it often.

Glass or metal one hitter?

Glass tastes cleaner and stays cooler at the mouth but breaks. Metal is tougher, fits most dugouts, and can taste metallic and get hot. Both work. Use a pipe made for smoking rather than improvising one.
