What does weed smell like?

Fresh, burning and stale are three different smells. Here's what makes each one, and what actually clears it.

Quick answer

Fresh cannabis smells earthy, herbal and a little sweet, with notes that range from citrus and pine to pepper and diesel depending on the strain, and some strains carry a sharp skunk-like edge. Burning cannabis smells like that plus smoke; stale cannabis smoke smells musty and clings to fabric.

The plant smell comes from terpenes, the same aroma compounds found in lemons, pine and hops. The skunk note comes from sulfur compounds a 2021 study found in the flower, the same chemical family as skunk spray. To clear the smell, ventilate first, then clean fabrics and wipe surfaces. Covering it with a spray mostly makes a new smell.

What fresh weed smells like

Open a jar and the first thing you notice is strength: cannabis is pungent. Under that, most people say earthy, herbal and woody. Then the strain's own notes. Those come from terpenes, aroma compounds the plant makes in the same resin glands that hold its THC. More than a hundred have been found in cannabis; a handful do most of the work.

TerpeneSmells likeAlso found in
MyrceneEarthy, musky, a little like mangoMango, thyme
LimoneneCitrusCitrus peel
PinenePine, rosemaryPine needles, rosemary
CaryophyllenePepper, clove, woodyBlack pepper, cloves
LinaloolFloralLavender

Strain names like Lemon Haze or Blueberry are usually a nod to the dominant terpene. The smell tells you about flavor, not strength. Two jars can smell completely different and test the same, and the entourage effect page covers why terpene charts promise more than they can show.

Why does weed smell like skunk?

For years the answer was "myrcene," and some health sites still say so. A 2021 study in the journal ACS Omega pointed somewhere else. The researchers noted there was "little evidence" that terpenes produce the skunk note. They identified a family of volatile sulfur compounds in cannabis, with one, 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol, as the main source of the skunk smell. Skunks use similar sulfur compounds in their spray; related ones are in garlic. In their trial, these compounds built up in the last weeks of flowering, peaked while the flower was cured, and dropped after about a week of storage. So the skunk note is likely strongest in fresh flower. It's one study, from a company lab whose researchers filed a patent on the finding, so treat it as a strong lead rather than the last word.

Fresh vs. burning vs. stale smoke

  • Fresh flower: the terpene smell above. Strong but clean, like a crushed herb. It fades over weeks to months. A 2020 storage study found terpene levels dropped under every condition tested, and ground flower ended up with less than whole buds.
  • Burning: the terpenes plus smoke, ash and paper. Most people recognize this one from a block away. It's sharper and travels further than fresh flower.
  • Stale: smoke that has settled into fabric, hair and walls. Musty, sour, sometimes sweet. This is the one roommates and landlords mean when they say the place smells like weed, and it's the hardest to get out.
  • Musty with a mildew edge: that's not a strain note, that's mold. The moldy weed guide shows what to look for.

How long does weed smell last?

No study has timed a room, so nobody can give you exact hours. The pattern people commonly describe: one joint in a room with a window open and air moving fades the same day. The same joint in a closed room can linger into the next day. Regular smoking in a closed room gets into the curtains and carpet and stays until they're washed. Vapor from a cart or a dry-herb vaporizer usually clears much faster, because there's no smoke to settle. Fresh flower in a sealed jar smells only when you open it; in a baggie, it leaks.

How to get rid of weed smell in a room or house

The EPA's advice for indoor air problems applies here: remove the source, ventilate with outdoor air, and only then filter. In order:

  1. Open windows and move air. A fan blowing out of one window with another cracked open pulls smoke through and out. Do this while you smoke, not after.
  2. Take the smoke outside. Smoking on a balcony or by a door solves most of it. Ash and butts go in a sealed container.
  3. Wash what smoke lands on. Curtains, throws, cushion covers and clothes: a normal hot wash, sun and air after. Vacuum carpet and upholstery.
  4. Wipe hard surfaces. Stale smoke is residue. Warm soapy water on walls, counters and window frames takes it off.
  5. Filter the rest. HEPA filters catch particles, not gases, and much of a smell is gas. For odor, the EPA says to choose an air cleaner with an activated carbon filter and a large amount of carbon in it. A small carbon sachet does little.
  6. Skip the cover-ups. Incense, candles and sprays add a smell on top. They don't remove anything, and "weed plus vanilla" is its own tell.

How to get weed smell out of a car

A car is a small closed room made of fabric, so it holds smell worse than a house. Windows down and a drive clears the air; the seats and headliner keep it. Vacuum, then wipe the hard surfaces with an interior cleaner, and shampoo cloth seats or run an upholstery cleaner over them. An open box of baking soda or a bag of activated charcoal under a seat absorbs some odor over days. The real fix is not to smoke in the car at all. And never drive high: the too high page has the no-driving rule.

How to not smell like weed

  • Smoke outside and stand upwind. Most of what lands on you is smoke you're standing in.
  • Hair and hands hold it. Wash your hands, splash your face, tie hair back or wear a hat you take off after.
  • Jacket off before you light up. The outer layer takes the smoke; the layer under it doesn't.
  • Brush your teeth or use mouthwash. Gum covers; brushing removes.
  • Vape instead. Vapor leaves far less on clothes and breath. See vapes.

Smell is the least of it

The CDC says secondhand cannabis smoke contains many of the same toxic and cancer-causing chemicals as tobacco smoke, some in higher amounts, that THC can pass to infants and children through secondhand smoke, and that people exposed to it can feel high. If you live with kids, pets, or anyone who didn't sign up for it, the question isn't how to hide the smell. It's where to smoke so the smoke never reaches them. Outside, away from windows, is the answer.

Products that smell less

  • Vape carts and dry-herb vaporizers: a faint smell that clears in minutes. See vapes.
  • Edibles: no smoke, so little or no smell. See edibles.
  • Dabs: less than smoke, but the terpenes fill a room for a few minutes. See dabs.
  • Flower in a glass jar rather than a bag. Airtight means no leak. See storage.

Words you'll hear

  • Terps: terpenes.
  • Dank, loud, gas: slang for strong-smelling flower. "Gas" means a fuel or diesel note.
  • Skunk: the sulfur note, and an old strain family named for it.
  • Contact high: feeling effects from other people's smoke. Smelling it doesn't do it; a sealed room full of smoke can. See contact high.
  • Sploof: a tube stuffed with dryer sheets or carbon that people exhale through. It cuts some smell; it doesn't remove smoke from the room.
  • Smell-proof bag: a lined pouch with a carbon layer and a good seal. Helps keep a backpack from smelling.

Common questions

How do you describe the smell of weed?

Fresh flower: pungent, earthy, herbal and a bit sweet, with strain notes like citrus, pine, pepper or diesel. Some strains add a sharp skunk-like edge. Burning weed smells like that plus smoke; stale smoke smells musty and sour.

Does weed smell like skunk?

Some strains do, strongly. A 2021 study found the skunk note comes from sulfur compounds in the flower, close relatives of the ones in skunk spray and garlic, not from terpenes. In that study, those compounds dropped after about a week of storage, so the skunk smell is likely strongest in fresh flower.

Can you smell if someone is smoking weed?

Usually, yes. Burning cannabis is sharp and carries, and it lands on hair and clothes. Vaping is far less noticeable, and edibles make no smoke at all.

What makes weed smell go away fast?

Moving air. Open two windows, put a fan in one blowing out, and the smoke leaves instead of settling. After that, wash fabrics and wipe surfaces. Sprays and incense cover the smell rather than removing it.

What scent cancels out weed smell?

None. A scent adds to the air; it doesn't remove smoke particles or the sulfur and terpene compounds. Ventilation, washing and, for the last bit, an air cleaner with a large activated carbon filter are what remove it.

Do carts smell like weed?

A little, briefly. Vapor carries terpenes, so a cart puff smells faintly of cannabis, but it usually fades within minutes. There's no smoke to settle into fabric, which is why vapes are the discreet choice.

Do dabs smell like weed?

Yes, for a few minutes. Concentrates are full of terpenes and heating them fills a room with a strong plant smell that clears faster than smoke. A dab pen is quieter than a torch rig.

Why does weed smell so bad to some people?

The sulfur compounds behind the skunk note are the same family that makes skunk spray and garlic breath, and many people find them unpleasant. Add stale smoke in a closed room and it reads as sour and musty.
